The effect of aspect on the forest edge along a power line corridor at Greenwoods Conservancy, summer 1999

چکیده
The fragmentation of forest ecosystems is common in the northeastern United States (Cadenasso, 1997). Many studies have focused on the biotic factors of forest edges. These have shown that edge vegetation is different compositionally and structurally from forest interior vegetation (Brothers, 1992; Luken, 1991; Matlack, 1993; 1994). Steeper climactic gradients are created when trees are removed, the understory expands, and species distributions become edge oriented (Matlack, 1994). Trends among abiotic factors influencing forest edges, including light, temperature, and soil moisture, are much more difficult to generalize (Cadenasso, 1997; Saunders, 1999). The zone of temperature change from a clearing to the interior at a forest edge can vary by as much as 45m during a single day and by 40m for anyone time of day during a week (Saunders, 1999). Abiotic factors influencing a forest edge may not correspond with forest boundaries defined by canopy cover (Cadenasso, 1999).

Understorey bird responses to the edge-interior gradient in an isolated tropical rainforest of Malaysia
Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of Asymmetry of Vortex Flow Over Single Delta Wings
It is generally believed that, on slender delta wings, there is a critical state at which strong asymmetric vortices are found along the leading edge on the lee-side of the delta wing. These asymmetric vortices can lead to high lateral forces even when slender delta wing is at the zero angle of yaw. Some experimental studies reported recently, cast considerable doubt as to the validity of the a...
متن کاملBuckling of Rectangular Functionally Graded Material Plates under Various Edge Conditions
In the present paper, the buckling problem of rectangular functionally graded (FG) plate with arbitrary edge supports is investigated. The present analysis is based on the classical plate theory (CPT) and large deformation is assumed for deriving stability equations. The plate is subjected to bi-axial compression loading. Mechanical properties of FG plate are assumed to vary continuously along ...

Ecological condition including physiographic factors have impact bon plant species diversity. There for it is necessary to investigate at the ecological condition in other to achieve sustainable development and natural ecosystem conservation. The present study aim is investigate the effect of physiographic factors (altitude and geographic directions) on the biological diversity of plant species...
متن کاملAssessment the effect of Slope aspect and position on some soil microbial indices in rangeland and forest
Extended abstract Introduction Topography is one of the effective factors in soil formation and development. Topographical features such as slope aspect and position, by affecting soil temperature, evaporation capacity, soil moisture content, soil organic matter, precipitation, movement, and accumulation of soil solution can impress soil microbial properties. For investigating the ...
